John Hancock and the Evening Skyline

John Hancock and the Evening Skyline

I’ve been getting out and taking pictures a lot lately. I’m trying to do it at least once a week. I’ve really started to explore deeper parts of Chicago and find new angles to view the skyline, and I couldn’t love it more.

Early in this summer’s endeavor I wandered down to the lakefront to look for some different angles to shoot the skyline. From North Avenue Beach, I was able to walk along the water’s edge with the various break walls jutting out from the shoreline, and they gave a nice ability to seemingly walk out over the water.

This picture is also one of the first where I, seemingly, became addicted to “blue hour.” It’s the time of the night when the sun is very low (or has set) and the sky has a beautiful, deep, rich blue color to it. I love the way the sky is light enough to see the detail in the buildings, but dark enough to still see the twinkle of the lights.

Cold Fun on a Hot Summer Day

Cold Fun on a Hot Summer Day

This week we flirted with 100 degrees. Even though autumn is around the corner, summer made sure to give a hearty reminder it is still here. We also regularly get a nice warm spell around mid-October, but this week was scorching hot. And, as if record-setting 95 degree temperatures weren’t enough, tomorrow we’re supposed to only get up to 65 degrees. That’s a 30 degree temperature swing in three days. Yikes!

This week’s furnace-like temperatures reminded me of last year’s late-June heat when we did hit 100+ degrees. In parts of Chicago, even though civilians opening hydrants is illegal, kids found creative ways to stay cool.

Of course: If its fun its against the law.

A Magnificent View

One of my favorite things about Chicago is how different the view of the skyline can be just by moving a block or two in another direction.

When my wife and I were preparing for our wedding, we toured a few hotels for our wedding guests to stay in. I was like a child in one of the hotels because it’s location was in the heart of the city.  As we went from room to room, I couldn’t help but stare out the windows at the city. I missed most of the presentation from the hotel representative because Chicago is one of the greatest cities in the world, with one of the greatest skylines to match.

This view is from the Near West Loop, not far from the southern tip of Goose Island.
