Disheveled Gary, Indiana
In Gary, Indiana, several buildings are abandoned. Even moreso, the kids have found their way into some of them and run amock.
This image is taken in the Post Office, before it was boarded up to better restrict entrance. All but one window was smashed out of the building, and everything else left in the building was in an equal shape of disarray.

Stairway of Doom
I dared not go up these stairs.
This image is from the Gary, Indiana Post Office. The building is now boarded up, with good reason, too.
These stairs went up to a second floor that had already partially caved in, and that’s without my weight wandering around. Even when I went to the other side of the building and found the stairs going down, the basement was full of standing water and, much like this set of stairs, I dared not go down those, either.

Slightly Out-of-Tune Piano
Okay, so maybe the piano is still in tune, but I’d bet my money otherwise.
This is another picture from the Gary, Indiana trip to document the decaying buildings. The front of the Palace Theater building was completely padlocked and secured. The back, however, looks quite the opposite. It looks like someone drove through the back wall with a bulldozer, then realized they wanted another six entryways into the building.
The stairway going up to the second level had completely collapsed, as I’m sure the second level wasn’t far behind. There was also a stairwell going down under the stage, but from my observation of the second level’s stairwell I didn’t need to go down that path.

Broken Window, Solid Lock
Gary, Indiana has a lot of abandoned buildings. Some are churches. Some are factories. This picture is from the post office.
I went down to Gary to wander around and shoot whatever I could find in a day. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have gone alone. There were far too many factors and no one would have known where I was or the status of my safety. In one of the old theaters I wandered through, a piano had fallen through the floor. While I don’t weigh as much as a piano, floors can still randomly give way in old buildings.
I also should have brought a better flashlight.
