Old Pier and Rising Sun

Old Pier and Rising Sun

I recently realized I don’t have many sunrise pictures.

Getting pictures of the sunrise involves getting up early and being in position about a half-and-hour before the sun actually introduces itself.

With my schedule and desire to sleep in sunrise pictures don’t happen naturally. Additionally, I feel like Chicago doesn’t offer up many opportunities to get glorious sunrise photos. Since our city faces the East, a lot of times the early-morning images involve shooting out over an endless surface of water. Personally, I think Lake Michigan, while it can be majestic, can also be quite flat and boring. For the few places with something to include in the foreground, like parts of an old, abandoned pier poking above the waterline of near Evanston, Illinois (above), I don’t feel like going back to the same places time and time again. Sure, the sunrise changes each and every day, but I don’t want to keep going back to the same places time and time again.

Maybe one day I’ll win the lottery so I can hike deep into the wilderness and camp for two weeks to get those majestic shots of the sun rising behind a mountain range. In reality, I need to suck it up and realize Chicago has thousands of fantastic places to shoot the sunrise, I just need to stop being a brat and wake up early for a change.

Old Pier Supports

It’s been a very long time since I’ve done anything with my website. I’ve done a handful of blog posts in the last couple of months, but the website as a whole, wasn’t working very well. I neglected to do an update so a lot of the images weren’t loading in the various galleries, which was a problem. Luckily, an hour of updating, downloading and clicking cleared everything up.

I’ve also been going through and cleaning up the blog posts. As I’ve written them over the last couple of years, there have been spelling and grammatical errors, not to mention the occasional broken links. It’s time consuming, but it’s also nice to comb through images again.

It has been quite some time since I’ve gone through images, and it seems like an even longer time since I’ve posted some online. Unfortunately, with the exception of attending some friends’ wedding in the U.S. Virgin Islands, I haven’t even picked up my camera.

All of that is about to change, however, as better weather is fast approaching and my busiest time of the year is now behind me. I look forward to getting out and capturing images again, and getting back into more regular photoblog posts (at least more frequent than one or two a month).

All of that being said, I picked today’s image because of the bright — really bright — colors. Last year I went up to Evanston, Illinois and waited for the sun to rise over an old, dilapidated pier. Turns out I was super-early for sunrise, but I didn’t mind because I captured one of my favorite images while I waited. I also scared the heck out of a family of raccoons, but they scared the heck out of me so it was an even trade.

Dilapidated Pier at Sunrise

Earlier this year I made my way to Evanston, Illinois and to shoot the sun rising behind an old, dilapidated pier along the shore of Lake Michigan.

When I arrived it was pitch-black outside, which made stumbling on a family of raccoons far more exciting than it should have been. I gave the raccoons plenty of room to decide what to do as I slowly set up my tripod. Eventually the furry family scampered away, and I moved around looking for the best position to shoot the sunrise.

After some time of sitting around and shooting a few pictures, waiting a couple of minutes for the light to change, and then shooting some more pictures, the sun started to peak above the horizon.

I like the way this picture turned out, with the bright sun breaking up the image. The dark, old pier is split by the sun’s reflection, and the bright blue sky gives the photograph some additional cover.

Old Pier Near Evanston, Illinois

Last week I posted an Instagram’d image onto my Facebook page of the same location as picture above.  I had gone out to scout for some early-morning sunrise locations, and I’ve found it’s much easier to explore when the sun is up than when it’s not.

So, just North of the Grosse Point Lighthouse is this small pier that has fallen on hard times. Currently the pier is just a collection of weather-beaten posts sticking out of the water, but it can still make for an interesting foreground.

This image was taken about forty-five minutes before the sun peaked over the horizon.  It was supposed to be partly cloudy on this morning, so I was hoping for more colors from the sun reflecting on clouds in the sky, but it obviously didn’t work out that way.

However, I still very much enjoy the image, and the tranquility it offers.

Grosse Point Lighthouse Through Weeds

Several years back I photographically attacked the Grosse Point Lighthouse in Evanston, Illinois; sadly I haven’t been back since. The lighthouse is less than a dozen miles from where I live, and I need to revisit it.

I’d imagine it’s a spectacular place to photograph in autumn.  The lighthouse is located among trees about one hundred meters/yards from Lake Michigan’s shoreline.

This past autumn, for the week before and after the prime color extravaganza, I had some things come up that pulled me away from photography.  That bummed me out because I had been waiting for most of the summer for autumn to arrive, and when it did I was nowhere to be found.

Before waiting until October of 2012, I’ll head back up to Evanston to see what winter and spring and a gentle snowfall can produce.

Early Morning Jogger

Early morning runner near the Grosse Point Lighthouse in Evanston, Illinois.

As previously mentioned in this space, some days I throw my camera in my work-bag to capture some images before, during or after work. On this day, I was working Northwestern University’s graduation ceremony and had to be at work about 7AM. I left work about an hour early and stopped at the Evanston Lighthouse to get the sun in that golden hour of soft, full light. As I was wandering around looking for good angles, a runner came along the beach, turned at the break-wall behind me and went back north past the lighthouse, aligning nicely for this image.
